Tennessee to Build $30 Million River Port Near Nashville

Published: May 29, 2025
Tennessee is partnering with Ingram Marine Group to establish a multimodal inland river port on the Cumberland River near Nashville, specifically in Cheatham County. The Ashland City River Port aims to enhance regional and national economic competitiveness by unloading freight bottlenecks and improving infrastructure. The project is backed by a $30 million investment, with the Tennessee Department of Transportation allocating $3 million to support the construction of the port’s pier.

Ingram Marine Group will finance the construction, transforming a 40-acre site previously used for county vehicles into a facility designed to handle dry cargo such as aluminum, cement, and rebar. The construction is expected to commence this summer, ultimately including a fixed dock and warehouse.

Local officials emphasize the port’s strategic location, which is within close proximity to major highways and rail access, enhancing supply chain operations and boosting economic activity. The port’s multimodal capabilities will facilitate more efficient transportation, reducing congestion and transportation costs, while also promoting sustainability by leveraging barging as a low-emission transportation option.

The initiative is projected to create jobs and contribute to the local economy, which Ashland City officials believe will elevate the community's role in the logistics and transportation sector. Such partnerships can be critical in addressing infrastructure challenges, as they foster investments that align public objectives with private sector expertise.

From a transportation perspective, this project highlights the increasing importance of multimodal facilities. As freight transportation continues to evolve, integrating various modes—water, rail, and road—streamlines logistics, enhances efficiency, and ultimately supports sustainable economic growth. The Ashland City River Port could serve as a model for similar projects nationwide, balancing economic development with ecological considerations.
