UK Gets Reprieve on Steel Tariff

Published: June 5, 2025
The U.K. is operating under a pressing five-week timeline to finalize a trade agreement with the U.S. Recently, President Donald Trump allowed the U.K. to avoid a steep increase in tariffs on steel and aluminum exports while negotiations continue. Although the U.K. dodged a potential 50% tariff increase, it still faces the threat of higher tariffs if it fails to comply with the terms of the agreement made between Trump and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The British government is focused on removing the existing 25% tariffs, which have raised concerns about the viability of the U.K. steel industry amid global overcapacity and declining demand. U.K. Steel representatives have pointed out that prolonged tariffs could threaten the survival of struggling mills. Under the proposed deal, U.K. export duties on metals would be reduced to zero, while auto tariffs would drop to 10%, contingent on specific compliance from the U.K.

The British government is also faced with its own challenges regarding the ownership of key steel manufacturing plants, particularly British Steel, which is currently controlled by a Chinese company. In light of the new proclamation from the White House, there is increased pressure on the U.K. government to expedite its plans regarding ownership or find a buyer for British Steel.

From a transportation perspective, the potential tariff removals could facilitate more efficient logistics and customs processes between the U.K. and the U.S., allowing for smoother trade flows. Decreasing barriers will not only benefit the steel and aluminum sectors but also have a broader impact on the supply chain dynamics, making it vital for the U.K. to navigate these negotiations effectively to enhance its export capabilities and safeguard jobs within affected industries.
