The historic Route 66, also known as the 'Mother Road,' is once again at the center of American travel as it celebrates its 100th anniversary. New data from Kampgrounds of America (KOA) reveals that the centennial is fueling a resurgence in road trips driven by a desire for slower and more deliberate exploration.
This increased interest in heritage or Americana-focused road trips is reflected in KOA's research, with 43% of campers planning to take such a trip. Furthermore, there is growing demand for longer, multistop journeys that prioritize small towns, historic landmarks, and roadside attractions.
According to Diane Eichler, senior vice president of marketing at KOA, the Route 66 centennial is an ideal opportunity for travelers to embark on their dream road trip. She notes that people are no longer just driving along the route but are instead stopping, exploring, and spending time in the small towns along the way.
Camping plays a vital role in making these immersive travel experiences possible. By providing a space to stop, explore, and connect with local places and people, camping allows travelers to truly experience the unique character of each town. The Route 66 Centennial Commission recognizes the importance of camping for travelers on the route.
Bill Thomas, Route 66 centennial commissioner and chair, emphasizes that the centennial is an invitation to rediscover the Mother Road. Camping along the route enables travelers to form a deeper connection with its landscapes, stories, and small towns, ensuring the road's vibrancy for generations to come.
KOA research indicates that camping is becoming increasingly popular among Route 66 travelers, with 41% planning to camp and 32% opting for glamping. This trend reflects the growing demand for flexible and experience-driven ways to explore the route.
The resurgence of interest in multi-day road trips is also driven by a desire for comfortable, accessible bases with friendly service. KOA's nearly 30 campgrounds strategically positioned near Route 66 cater to this need, allowing travelers to choose their own pace and rhythm.
With its flexible accommodation options, including RV sites, tent pitches, and cabins, KOA offers something for every type of traveler. Whether traveling in an RV or pitching a tent, campers can stop when they please and move on when ready, making the most of their time on Route 66.
As the outdoor hospitality industry continues to evolve, it will be exciting to see how KOA's research informs future trends and developments in leisure travel and camping. The release of the 2026 Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report on April 13 marks an important milestone in this journey.
The Route 66 centennial is a pivotal moment for the US road trip industry, as it marks a shift towards more intentional and immersive travel experiences.
