Greedy Toyota Dealers Adding Huge Markups To New RAV4

Greedy Toyota Dealers Adding Huge Markups To New RAV4

The redesigned Toyota RAV4 has hit the market, but some dealers are taking advantage of customers by adding huge markups to the vehicle's price. Despite starting at $31,900 and coming standard with a hybridized powertrain, some dealers are charging thousands over the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP). This is not only frustrating for customers but also undermines the value proposition that Toyota has worked hard to establish with its new model.

In this article, we will explore some of the worst offenders and provide guidance on how to avoid being taken advantage of. The Toyota RAV4 is one of the best-selling vehicles in America, and it's easy to see why - with its space, efficiency, and value, it has become a favorite among drivers. However, some dealers are ruining the launch of the redesigned model by adding excessive markups to the vehicle's price.

We did a quick search online and found numerous examples of these egregious markups in a matter of minutes. One of the worst offenders was Stevens Creek Toyota, which has a 2026 RAV4 Limited listed for $52,857, including a $4,700 'dealer markup' and $295 of dealer-installed accessories. While the description mentions $3,407 worth of packages and accessories, it's unclear what exactly these add-ons are and how they justify such a high price tag.

Customers should probably head for the door themselves if they see this kind of pricing. Another dealership that stands out is Magnussen's Toyota of Palo Alto, which appears to have a $3,999 markup on all 2026 RAV4s. As a result, a $46,444 RAV4 XSE is listed for $50,443, while a $48,083 Limited is priced from $52,082.

This kind of pricing is not surprising in California, but it's still unacceptable. Molle Toyota of Kansas City has also slapped a $1,104 'dealer adjustment' on their RAV4 Limited, inflating the price from $47,404 to $48,508. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time we've seen Toyota dealers take advantage of customers by adding huge markups.

The redesigned Land Cruiser and Tacoma were hit with similar dealer adjustments at launch, while some dealers even brazenly slapped markups on the Camry. This kind of behavior is not only unfair to customers but also undermines the trust that Toyota has worked hard to establish with its new model. As a result, it's essential for customers to be aware of these markups and take steps to avoid being taken advantage of.

The timing couldn't be worse, as Toyota is spending millions of dollars on a new Super Bowl ad promoting the redesigned RAV4. The model starts at $31,900 and comes standard with a hybridized powertrain producing up to 236 hp (176 kW / 239 PS). With so many other dealers selling at MSRP, there's no reason to pay a markup on a RAV4.

Dealers who are willing to take advantage of customers should be called out for their behavior, and we urge our readers to do their research before making a purchase.

These markups are not only frustrating but also demonstrate a lack of transparency and honesty from some dealers. As a result, it's essential for customers to be aware of these practices and take steps to protect themselves.
