Massimo Dealer's Daring Gamble Pays Off

Uncharted Adventures, a small West Virginia dealership, was on the brink of bankruptcy due to struggling sales. However, owner Chad Hutchens decided to take a risk by opening a second location and shifting his focus to powersports. This unconventional move proved to be a turning point for the business.

The new dealership, located inside Mercer Mall in Princeton, West Virginia, focused on selling ATVs and UTVs, which quickly gained popularity among customers. Hutchens' decision to diversify into powersports was driven by his previous experience as a general manager for several years.

Despite initial concerns about the financial viability of the venture, sales started picking up immediately, with the dealership moving around 15-20 units per month. By the end of the year, this number had grown to 40 units, mostly used ATVs and UTVs. This surge in revenue helped Uncharted Adventures get out of the financial quicksand.

The small operation proved to be an effective stepping stone for Hutchens' business, allowing him to regain momentum and confidence. His analogy compares this process to a recovering athlete needing time to 'get back in the game'.

Hutchens has since retired from his first dealership location and now uses it as a storage garage. He has opened up two additional locations in West Virginia, with his current powersports brands including Segway, KYMCO, Aodes, and Moto Morini.

The dealership's success can be attributed to its focus on mid-level UTVs, which have become increasingly popular among customers. Hutchens notes that these vehicles were once considered too expensive for many buyers but are now a norm in the industry.

In 2025, Uncharted Adventures was named the No. 1 Massimo dealer in the US, with sales exceeding 200 units last year. This achievement is a testament to the dealership's ability to offer high-quality products at competitive prices.

Hutchens attributes his success to offering machines that can be used for various activities, such as recreation and work, without breaking the bank. He believes this approach has helped him stand out in the market.

The dealership's growth demonstrates the potential for innovative business strategies to drive success in the powersports industry. As the market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how other dealerships adapt to changing consumer demands.
