The facelifted VW California is set to receive a refresh, with subtle updates aimed at giving it a more contemporary feel. The prototype recently spotted during winter testing in Europe wears minimal disguise and could easily be mistaken for the existing version at first glance.
Closer inspection reveals tweaks to the grille and headlight design, including new LED light signatures. An LED light bar will stretch between the headlights, while a new bumper is expected for the production model.
At the rear, changes are even more subtle, with reworked taillights and possibly a fresh bumper design on the final production version. The California will also receive VW's latest Modular Infotainment Matrix 4 (MIB4) system, complete with ChatGPT functionality and a larger free-standing display.
However, not all of the news will be welcomed, as VW's widely criticized touch-sensitive temperature sliders appear to remain part of the package. Storage solutions could also be refined, with VW potentially rethinking the layout of cubbies and compartments to improve daily usability.
The powertrain front is expected to remain largely unchanged, although the California will be updated to comply with Euro 7 standards, which take effect on November 29, 2026. 7 kWh battery.
It's not surprising that VW is taking a cautious approach to updating the California, given its popularity among campervan enthusiasts. However, these subtle updates should help bring the camper into line with modern standards without alienating existing owners.
