Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast is expanding its presence in the Indian market, a move that could significantly impact the country's growing electric mobility sector. With a focus on two-wheeler sales, VinFast aims to capitalize on India's massive motorcycle and scooter market, which is expected to drive growth for the company's electric scooters. The company has already laid groundwork for its electric car business in the country and now plans to launch a lineup of electric scooters as part of its broader push into India's fast-growing EV sector.

VinFast has confirmed that it will bring three of its existing electric scooters – the Evo, Feliz, and Viper – to India, marking its initial entry into the segment. These models are already sold in Vietnam and will be adapted for Indian riding conditions and usage patterns. Early units are expected to arrive as completely knocked down (CKD) kits assembled locally at VinFast's plant in Tamil Nadu.

The scooters themselves span a range of performance and use cases, with the Evo positioned as a lightweight urban commuter, while the Feliz and Viper step up in size and capability. The latter two models ride on larger 14-inch wheels and offer up to 4.8 kWh of battery capacity and a more powerful 3 kW motor.

VinFast's electric scooters will utilize lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry, known for its improved thermal stability and long lifespan – a crucial consideration in India's hot climate. This technology is expected to provide a competitive edge for VinFast in the Indian market.

The company is also exploring battery swapping as part of its strategy, which could reduce downtime for riders who rely on their scooters daily. This feature is particularly important for commuters and delivery drivers who need their vehicles to be readily available.

VinFast's move into India underscores the significance of this country in the global two-wheeler landscape. With tens of millions of units sold annually, India is widely considered the largest motorcycle and scooter market in the world.

The Indian government has been actively promoting electric mobility through various incentives and initiatives, which has led to a surge in demand for electric scooters and motorcycles. As a result, VinFast's entry into this market positions it well for success.

VinFast's electric scooters will face stiff competition from established local players like Ather, Ola Electric, and TVS. However, the company's strategic move could also help tap into one of the most important transitions happening in global transportation today – the shift towards sustainable mobility.

With its entry into India's massive motorcycle market, VinFast is poised to capitalize on a critical trend driving growth in electric mobility worldwide.
