USPS Trucking Contractors Sentenced in Bribery Scheme

A recent court decision has brought attention to the corrupt practices of four defendants involved in a bribery scheme with the U.S. Postal Service trucking contractors. The defendants, who were found guilty of soliciting and receiving approximately $1.5 million in kickbacks from multiple trucking companies, have been sentenced to a combined 99 months in federal prison. This shocking revelation highlights the need for increased scrutiny and oversight in government contracting processes to prevent such corrupt practices from occurring in the future.

The bribery scheme, which began in 2015, involved a former senior network analyst for the Postal Service, Zechariah Yi of Aurora, Colorado, and a second USPS employee, Tai Ryoung Rho, who solicited and received kickbacks from trucking company owners in exchange for helping them obtain USPS service contracts worth approximately $15 million over a six-year period. The scheme was uncovered through an investigation by the FBI, which assisted with the case.

The defendants, including Wan Jin Yoon and Hong Jin Yoon, who owned Assured Trucking Inc. and Postal Box Inc., respectively, were found guilty of conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud. They pled guilty to soliciting bribes from public officials and laundering payments through a third individual to Yi and Rho.

The court documents also revealed that Wan Jin Yoon is related to Yi, adding another layer of complexity to the case. The defendants' actions not only compromised the integrity of the government contracting process but also put the interests of private companies above those of the public.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould emphasized the need for honesty and fairness in government contracting processes, stating that 'the public must have confidence that Postal Service employees will conduct their work in an honest manner.'

The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in government agencies. The U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General has pledged to aggressively investigate and prosecute cases like this one, ensuring that employees who commit serious offenses are held accountable.

The investigation was assisted by the FBI, which worked tirelessly to uncover the truth behind the bribery scheme. This collaboration highlights the importance of interagency cooperation in combating corruption and white-collar crime.

The defendants' actions have also had significant financial consequences, with the defendants agreeing to forfeit two vehicles and over $300,000 cash as part of their plea deals.

As the industry continues to grapple with issues of corruption and accountability, this case serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked power and greed. The U.S. Postal Service must continue to prioritize integrity and fairness in its contracting processes to maintain public trust.
