Rivian has announced a recall affecting 869 of its R1T and R1S vehicles in the United States due to a potential issue with the second-row seatbelt retractor bolt. This bolt may be loose or missing, which could lead to rattling noises near the C-pillar area. This recall marks the second seatbelt-related action from Rivian in just two months, following a larger recall involving nearly 35,000 units of its electric delivery van. The current recall specifically targets 2022–2025 Rivian R1T trucks and 2022–2026 R1S SUVs.
According to Rivian, the issue stems from the possibility that the second-row seatbelt retractor bolt was not properly installed during the manufacturing process. If the bolt is inadequately secured, it could fail to restrain passengers effectively in the event of a crash, significantly increasing the risk of injury for those seated on either the driver or passenger side. The rattling noise that some owners may hear could serve as an early warning sign of this problem, indicating that the seatbelt retractor is not firmly in place.
The recall affects a total of 869 vehicles, with 434 R1T trucks produced between September 15, 2021, and April 10, 2025, and 435 R1S SUVs manufactured from May 9, 2022, to May 15, 2025. Rivian has reported no known accidents or injuries related to this issue, which was first identified on September 16, 2025, when a technician found a loose retractor during a routine service on an R1T.
Despite not uncovering additional defective assemblies after extensive follow-up, Rivian has decided to proceed with the recall as a precautionary measure. Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified about the recall starting March 9. To address the issue, Rivian will ensure that the seatbelt retractor assembly is properly secured in all affected vehicles at no cost to the owners. This recall is not connected to the previous recall involving the electric delivery van, showcasing Rivian's proactive approach to vehicle safety.
