Mercedes-Benz to Install EV Chargers at 100 Starbucks
Published: July 21, 2024
Starbucks and Mercedes-Benz have formed a partnership to install high-power electric vehicle (EV) chargers at 100 Starbucks locations across the United States, starting on the West Coast with plans for East Coast sites to follow. This initiative is part of Mercedes-Benz’s broader goal to enhance the EV charging network in the U.S., which includes a significant investment of $1 billion for the installation of 2,000 chargers globally by the end of 2024. The first charging hub was opened in Sandy Springs, Georgia, featuring high-speed chargers available to all EV brands.
Both companies emphasize that expanding the charging infrastructure is crucial for encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles, addressing a significant concern among potential buyers regarding the lack of charging options. Andrew Cornelia, CEO of Mercedes-Benz’s EV charging division, envisions a future where recharging a vehicle is as seamless as grabbing a coffee from Starbucks. The partnership aligns with Starbucks’ sustainability goals to reduce its carbon footprint by 50% by 2030, focusing on urban areas with limited charging access.
With the Biden administration investing heavily in charging initiatives and state programs like Georgia Power's Make Ready program supporting these goals, Georgia has positioned itself as a frontrunner in the EV industry, attracting vast investments and creating thousands of jobs.
The collaboration between Starbucks and Mercedes-Benz reflects an innovative approach to address the charging infrastructure gap, demonstrating how strategic partnerships can facilitate broader EV adoption. This is particularly crucial as the transportation sector shifts towards sustainability. By integrating EV charging with everyday locations frequented by consumers, the project could alleviate range anxiety and encourage more drivers to make the switch to electric vehicles, thus propelling the transition to greener transportation solutions.
