Mercedes-Benz to Replace Four-Cylinder Powertrain with Inline-6 in AMG C-Class

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that its current C63 sport sedan will drop its plug-in hybrid four-cylinder heart in favor of an AMG model packing naturally-aspirated inline-six. This decision comes as the performance wing of the German automaker is looking to replace its turbocharged four-cylinder engine, known internally as the M139, due to regulatory challenges.

The new inline-six powertrain will also be installed in future iterations of C-Class and will not feature a hybrid engine. Mercedes-AMG boss Michael Schiebe confirmed that the company will 'replace our four-cylinder' with a six-pot, citing the need for compliance with EU7 regulations as a major factor in this decision.

The move is part of a broader strategy to offer more efficient powertrains and maintain the brand's heritage. With the C63 no longer available, enthusiasts are hoping that future AMG models will offer higher power levels, potentially above 500 horsepower.

Despite regulatory challenges, Mercedes remains committed to offering six-cylinder and V-8 power in its upcoming models. The company has recently debuted a new flat-plane-crankshaft V-8 engine in the 2027 S-Class, which is expected to find its home in other Mercedes models.

This move by Mercedes highlights the importance of regulatory compliance in the automotive industry, as well as the need for manufacturers to balance performance with efficiency. The transition to inline-six powertrains will undoubtedly bring new benefits and challenges for AMG enthusiasts.
