Peugeot's China-Focused EV Flagships Stir Industry Interest

Peugeot's recent debut at the Beijing Auto Show has generated significant interest among automotive enthusiasts and s alike. The French manufacturer showcased two new concepts, Concept 6 and Concept 8, which preview potential flagship electric vehicles. These designs hint at a renewed focus on China as a key market for Peugeot's future EV models.

The Concept 6 appears to be a successor to the old 508 wagon, with a sleek fastback design that may translate to a real-life 508 SW. However, judging from its angle of rear window, practicality takes a back seat to design flair, which could compromise passenger space in the actual back seat.

The Concept 8, on the other hand, is possibly more ambitious, potentially showcasing Peugeot's aspirations for a big luxury SUV that sits above the current 5008. This idea is backed up by comments from Peugeot CEO Alain Favey, who previously mentioned his intention to create a new halo SUV.

The design cues used in both concepts are reminiscent of Audi's R8, with a split rear spoiler and horizontal light bars. These elements also appear in the Polygon concept, believed to be a preview of the next 208 hatch. The clean surfaces, voluptuous rear fenders, and pinched waist of the Concept 8 are particularly noteworthy.

Interestingly, Peugeot states that the production cars hinted at by these concepts are designed predominantly for the Chinese market and will be built by its partner Dongfeng in Wuhan. However, it also notes that those cars will be exported to the West from China, suggesting a broader global reach than initially thought.

The move suggests Peugeot is looking to expand its presence in the global EV market beyond Europe, where it has traditionally been a significant player. This could potentially impact other manufacturers' strategies for their own electric vehicle offerings.

Despite being designed primarily for China, these concepts demonstrate Peugeot's commitment to creating stylish and desirable EVs that can compete with other major players in the industry.

The Beijing Auto Show has provided an opportunity for Peugeot to showcase its vision for the future of electric vehicles. As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these concepts translate into production cars and impact the market as a whole.

Peugeot's China-focused EV flagships are likely to generate significant interest among s and enthusiasts alike, particularly in light of their potential for global expansion.
