In reality, auction slots are reserved daily to accommodate specific segments like LPG and LNG that require space on short notice. Canceled bookings are then added to the list of available slots, which can range from three to five per day.
The introduction of auction slots was made to ensure transparency and fairness in determining priority and pricing. The market determines who transits the Canal and at what price, rather than the Authority itself.
As a result, prices for auction slots have steadily increased as more tankers loaded with U.S. crude, LNG, or petroleum products head to the Canal for delivery to Asia. Before the war, these slots were priced between $135,000 and $140,000.
The price surge can be attributed to increasing demand, with bids exceeding $1 million to $4 million reflecting market demand. The Authority credits favorable weather conditions, including wet weather, for enabling them to increase transit velocity and capacity.
This increased capacity has allowed the Panama Canal to accommodate a larger number of vessels, with around 12 tankers transiting daily in the Panamax lane, compared to seven before the war.
The armada of vessels loaded with U.S. energy shows no signs of slowing down, with LNGs surging from five per month to around 15. The Authority expects this trend to continue, driven by market demand and favorable weather conditions.
The Panama Canal's increased capacity is a result of improved management and efficiency, allowing the Authority to ramp up capacity by 15 percent. This increase in capacity could be sustained for another few months, depending on weather conditions.
