From a technical standpoint, traditional hot rods feature mid-century go-faster parts like Ford Flathead V8s paired with manual transmissions like Toploader three-speeds. The suspension geometry remains close to the original straight axle design but has been lowered to improve handling.

The addition of bias-ply tires with narrower front and thicker rear setups completes the classic look. Hot rods are characterized by their lack of compromise, with every modification serving a functional purpose in racing.

The Street Rod represents a shift from hardcore racing tools to reliable high-performance cruisers. This evolution prioritizes driveability and reliability over raw speed, often utilizing modern crate engines like Chevrolet LS or Ford Coyote V8s.

Street rodders prioritize comfort and usability, incorporating features like independent front suspension, hydraulic power-assisted steering, and disc brakes. The interiors feature heavy insulation for reduced noise and engine heat, as well as modern comforts like air-conditioning and music systems.

In contrast to stripped-down hot rods, street rods are fully equipped and designed for regular driving. This necessitates upgrading the vehicle's underpinnings, such as suspension and braking systems.

Rat rods take individualism to the next level, showcasing creative patchwork designs that push the boundaries of what a hot rod can be.
