For the first time, BMW is bringing all its iconic Art Cars together in a rare exhibition, celebrating half a century of rolling art. The collection, titled 'BMW Art Cars — 20 Artists, 50 Years of Innovation. Reunited at BMW Welt.', features 20 cars that have been produced over the past five decades.
The practice of transforming metal sculptures into moving artworks has been around for decades, but BMW's dedication to this project is what sets it apart. With 20 Art Cars in collaboration with renowned artists such as David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Jeff Koons, and Andy Warhol, the German automaker has made a lasting impact on the art world.
The first Art Car, designed by Alexander Calder, was unveiled at the 1975 24 Hours of Le Mans. This pioneering collaboration marked the beginning of BMW's involvement in the art world, which would go on to span over five decades.

Many of BMW's Art Cars have been designed for competition as special liveries, while others were created solely as works of art. The 2007 BMW H2R project, designed by Olafur Eliasson, is a prime example of the latter, featuring a unique translucent outer shell composed of steel and ice.
The entire collection will be on display at the BMW Museum in Munich for the finale, following separate appearances at various museums, car shows, and festivals throughout Europe, Asia, and other locations.
BMW's Art Car World Tour has been a way to share its 50 years of art collaborations with the world. The tour began at the end of 2024 with an exhibit at the Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg, South Africa, and will make several stops before returning to Munich for the finale.
