F1 Trials Rail Freight for Greener Logistics

The Formula 1 series has taken a significant step towards reducing its carbon footprint by partnering with DHL Global Forwarding to use intermodal rail freight in its logistics operations. The company successfully completed its first-ever use of this mode, moving approximately 50 containers between Miami and Montreal, with the goal of minimizing emissions while meeting tight timelines.

This pilot project demonstrates that established transport modes can be applied in new ways to support sustainability in a highly time-critical environment. By introducing rail into their logistics mix, DHL has successfully reduced carbon emissions while ensuring the safe and on-time delivery of race equipment.

The use of rail freight is particularly significant given Formula 1's goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030. This initiative not only aligns with the sport's environmental objectives but also reflects DHL Group's target to decarbonize its global logistics network by 2050.

According to Paul Fowler, head of global motorsports logistics at DHL Global Forwarding, introducing rail into their logistics mix shows how established transport modes can be applied in new ways to support sustainability. The successful delivery of all freight in this pilot demonstrates that rail can reliably support Formula 1's demanding schedule while contributing to lower emissions.

The Miami race concluded on May 3 and the Canadian grand prix event begins Friday, May 22, marking the latest leg of DHL's F1 logistics tour. With multiple races scheduled across North America, including Las Vegas and Austin, Texas, the company is evaluating opportunities to scale up rail usage in the region.

DHL Global Forwarding and Formula 1 are currently assessing operational feasibility and results from this year's trial before scaling up rail usage in North America starting with the 2027 season. Collected data will be used to evaluate key operational criteria and sustainability performance.

The sport of Formula 1 has set a goal for net zero carbon emissions by 2030, while DHL Group is targeting 2050 to decarbonize its global logistics network. This partnership highlights the growing importance of sustainable practices in the logistics industry.

Demanding race schedules require precision logistics, and DHL's F1 operations are no exception. With hundreds of crates and containers moving in parallel for every grand prix, the company must ensure timely and efficient delivery to meet the sport's high standards.

Other emissions-reduction practices employed by DHL on the Formula 1 tour include the use of sustainable aviation fuel for select cases of air transport, biofuel-powered trucks in Europe, and optimized route planning to reduce transport distances and efficiency.
