Rail Traffic Sees Strong Performance Amidst Industry Shifts

Rail traffic has continued its recent strong performance, with 511,216 carloads and intermodal units shipped in the week ending May 16, a 4.2% increase compared to the same week last year.

This uptick in rail volume is attributed to various factors, including improved demand for certain commodities such as grain, petroleum, and forest products.

The Association of American Railroads reported that shipments for the week ended May 16 totaled 230,497 carloads, up 0.6% year-over-year, while weekly intermodal volume reached 280,719 containers and trailers, a 7.3% gain compared to 2025.

Seven out of ten carload commodities tracked by AAR improved year-over-year, with grain continuing its banner run at an impressive 14.5%, followed closely by petroleum and petroleum products at 9.8%.

However, not all commodities fared well, with coal and nonmetallic minerals experiencing declines of 6.2% and 0.4%, respectively.

The strong performance is also evident in the cumulative volume reported by U.S. railroads for the first 19 weeks of 2026, which saw a 3.4% increase to 4,297,732 carloads.

This growth is further reflected in the intermodal containers and trailers, which rose 0.9% over the same period to reach 5,262,810 units.

The combined total of carloads and intermodal units reached 9,560,542, a 2% gain year-over-year.

Looking ahead, North American rail volume for the week on nine reporting U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads totaled 341,822 carloads, up 1.6% from the same week last year.

Intermodal units also saw significant growth, reaching 374,372 units, a 6.7% increase compared to the previous year.
