The conventional diesel engines of the time were limited by their narrow rev range, which resulted in poor performance at low RPMs. To overcome this issue, trucks often used 11, 13, or even 15-speed gearboxes to compensate for the lack of power at lower engine speeds.

As a result of its advanced technology, the Maxidyne engine was mated to a simple 5-speed transmission that was widely spaced and rugged enough for heavy-duty use. This allowed truckers to drive a fully loaded Mack from a dead stop in fourth or fifth gear without risking damage to the drivetrain.
