WestJet Expands Europe Flights

WestJet continues its growth in transatlantic flights to Europe, with eight new nonstop routes launched from four Canadian bases.

These routes will take flight between early May and late June, marking an increase in connectivity for passengers traveling between Canada and Europe.

The airline's decision to operate all of these flights using Boeing 737 MAX 8 narrowbody twinjets is a strategic move to optimize efficiency and reduce costs.

While WestJet does fly widebodies in the form of the 787-9 Dreamliners, these planes are based out of Calgary International Airport, and none of the new routes originate there.

The expansion of WestJet's European network is particularly notable for its focus on Toronto and Halifax bases, with three new routes launched from each airport.

Toronto Pearson International Airport will see flights to Ponta Delgada in the Azores, Glasgow Airport in Scotland, and Cardiff Airport in Wales, while Halifax Stanfield International Airport will serve Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport in Portugal, Adolfo Suárez Madrid Barajas Airport in Spain, and Copenhagen Kastrup Airport in Denmark.

This increase in connectivity is expected to have a positive impact on the airline's revenue, as well as providing passengers with more convenient travel options.

The expansion of WestJet's European network reflects a wider trend that dates back over a decade, with the airline having seen significant growth in its transatlantic flights since 2022.

As the aviation industry continues to recover from the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, carriers like WestJet are well-positioned to capitalize on growing demand for international travel.
