The Subaru Uncharted is Subaru's new mid-size electric SUV, intended as an entry-level offering with an ample list of features. It sits right alongside the Toyota C-HR in terms of size and is built in Toyota's factories, with Subaru bringing its off-road expertise to the suspension tuning and AWD control logic.
This focus on off-road capabilities is a key aspect of the Uncharted's design, but it also raises questions about how much of this can be carried over from Subaru's traditional gas-powered vehicles. The answer, as we saw during our test drive, was that the Uncharted has more than held its own in challenging conditions.
The AWD version gains an extra motor, along with features like heated steering wheel, drive mode select, adjustable power seats, and surround view monitor. X-MODE is Subaru's improved traction and braking system for all-wheel drive, which can be selected with a button next to the shifter.

X-MODE helps control hill descents and provides better stability on difficult terrain and low-traction surfaces like gravel, snow, and mud. It also helps improve overall safety during challenging driving conditions.
The Uncharted's battery is charged at 150kW, with a charge time of 28 minutes to fill the 74.7kWh battery from 10-80%. This charging speed is neither the best nor the worst out there, but it should be sufficient for most users.
One missing feature is charge routing, which allows some EVs to optimize their charging routes and make road trips easier. The Uncharted does not have this feature, although it can search for charging stations through Subaru's Remote Connect feature.

Subaru has committed to providing software updates for the Uncharted, but the company could not provide details on its strategy or whether the cars are capable of over-the-air updates.
The Uncharted also lacks a 'dog mode' to keep the HVAC activated while parked, although it does have a 'My Room' mode that provides similar functionality when plugged in.
On the highway, the Uncharted proved to be a comfortable and spacious ride, thanks to its low center of gravity and instant torque provided by the car's EV powertrain.

The EyeSight drive assist features worked well during our test drive, including traffic aware cruise control and lane centering. However, the steering wheel button chords could be improved for easier activation.
Overall, the Subaru Uncharted EV is a solid choice for those looking for an entry-level electric SUV with off-road capabilities. While it may have missed some marks on pricing and features, its drive experience felt competent and capable.
The Subaru Uncharted EV offers a solid set of specs and a drive experience that felt competent and capable, but may have missed the mark on pricing and some features.
