April Class 8 Truck Sales Slip 8.7% as Market Slump Persists

Published: May 13, 2025
U.S. Class 8 truck sales continued their downward trend in April, marking almost two years of year-over-year declines, with a decrease of 8.7% compared to the same month last year. This equated to sales of 18,078 units, down from 19,798 in April 2022. Sequentially, sales fell by 3.2% from March's total of 18,682 units, culminating in a 9.2% drop in year-to-date sales, which now stand at 68,680 units compared to 75,657 previously.

Among the major truck manufacturers, only two saw an increase in sales year-over-year. Freightliner remained the market leader, selling 6,551 trucks, representing a small rise from the previous year. Conversely, several brands, including Mack Trucks, Volvo Trucks, International Motors, Peterbilt, and Kenworth, all experienced notable declines, with International Motors seeing the steepest drop at 32.1%.

In the context of transportation trends, this decline may reflect broader economic uncertainties, including fluctuating demand, rising costs, and supply chain challenges. The statistical performance of major manufacturers highlights the competitive landscape, with Freightliner capitalizing on market conditions while others struggle. As businesses adapt to these challenges, investment in efficient and sustainable transport solutions will be crucial to navigate the evolving market dynamics, particularly in the face of growing environmental regulations and the need for fuel efficiency.
