BMW's Next X5 Gets a Fresh New Look and Wide Range of Engine Choices

BMW's next-generation 2027 (or possibly, 2028MY) X5 has finally been given a clearer glimpse of its design thanks to new detailed renderings. The early leaks didn't offer much in terms of visual details, but these latest visuals make it easier to identify the key changes that will set this new model apart from its predecessor. One of the most notable aspects of the new design is the adoption of a fresh styling direction, which mirrors the second-generation iX3 revealed six months ago.

The front end of the X5 features upright kidney grilles and distinctive headlights, now paired with X-shaped daytime running lights. The lower section of the fascia is finished in gloss black, a panel that is also expected to integrate sensors and cameras for the SUV's driver-assistance systems. This new design direction marks a significant shift away from the more restrained look of the current model.

The sides of the X5 have been simplified, with convoluted lines from the outgoing model ditched in favor of smoother door panels and front and rear quarter panels with squared-off indentations. The aggressive rear design, including a sharply styled two-tone bumper, a diffuser, and quad tailpipes, is also expected to carry over into these renderings.

The cabin display setup for the X5 has been confirmed, with BMW's latest Panoramic iDrive setup featuring a central touchscreen paired with a slim display stretching across the base of the windscreen. This full-width screen will handle essential driving information, navigation, and media, all positioned directly in the driver's line of sight.

The new X5 is expected to offer an unusually wide range of engine choices, spanning gas, diesel, plug-in hybrid, all-electric, and even hydrogen configurations. This move is likely to appeal to a broad range of buyers, from those seeking a more traditional driving experience to those prioritizing sustainability and zero-emission capabilities.

The combustion variants are expected to include the 40, 40 xDrive, 40d xDrive, 50e xDrive, M60 xDrive, and the M60e xDrive, with engine options ranging from turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and 3.0-liter inline-six units to a new X5 M powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8.

On the electric side, at least six variants are anticipated, including the possibility of a range-extender EV still on the table. The all-electric variant will be called the iX5, mirroring the i5's familiar tiered lineup, with the entry-level eDrive40 expected to deliver around 340 hp and the iX5 M60 pushing close to 600 hp.

The new X5 is expected to debut around mid-2026, with customer deliveries likely beginning in early 2027. This marks a significant shift in BMW's product lineup, as the company moves towards a more diverse range of powertrains and models.

With its fresh design direction, wide range of engine choices, and competitive pricing, the new X5 is poised to challenge established luxury SUVs like the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport, as well as newer electric rivals such as the Volvo EX90 and Polestar 3.
