As an avid cyclist with 75 years of riding experience, I've learned that bikes and ebikes can be used for various purposes, including commuting, recreation, and even transportation. However, the risks associated with cycling are real, and it's essential to take necessary precautions to ensure safety on the road. In my previous article, I discussed how bikes and ebikes can be used for different activities, but today, I'll focus on specific strategies for riding safely on roads with traffic.

When riding on roads with traffic, it's crucial to concentrate and stay aware of your surroundings. One effective strategy is to occupy a good part of the lane and watch for cars behind you using a rearview mirror or a similar device. This allows you to anticipate potential collisions and react accordingly. By doing so, riders can minimize the risk of being hit by an oncoming vehicle.

However, even with these precautions, accidents can still occur. That's why it's essential to wear safety gear, including helmets, bright/reflective wear, and lights. Helmets are a must-have for cyclists, as they protect the head from serious injury in case of a crash. Bright/reflective wear can increase visibility, especially at night or in low-light conditions, while lights can be installed on most bikes to enhance safety.

In addition to these safety measures, riders should also be mindful of motorized vehicle barriers on bike trails. While these barriers are intended to keep motorized vehicles off the trails, they can be hazardous if not used properly. Riders should always check for open barriers and exercise caution when approaching them.

When it comes to pedals, clip-in pedals and shoes offer a significant advantage in terms of power and control. However, they require concentration to use effectively, especially when coming to a stop. In contrast, flat or breadbasket-style pedals are often preferred by mountain bike riders due to their ease of use and quick response.

Another common mistake among cyclists is wearing earbuds while riding. This can be hazardous, as it reduces situational awareness and makes it difficult to hear potential hazards. Riders should avoid blasting music and instead opt for listening to music or podcasts with headphones or earbuds.

Performance road bikes and mountain bikes often use disc brakes, which offer improved stopping power and control. However, rim brakes are still widely used, especially on older bikes. Regardless of the type of brake, it's essential to maintain proper tire pressure and ensure that the brakes are in good working condition.

Riding a bike is a safer option when separated from traffic, but riders must stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure safety. By following these strategies and staying focused, cyclists can minimize their risk of injury or accident.

In conclusion, safety is paramount for cyclists. By wearing safety gear, using rearview mirrors, and exercising caution on roads with traffic, riders can significantly reduce their risk of injury. Additionally, being mindful of motorized vehicle barriers, choosing the right pedals, avoiding earbuds, and maintaining proper bike maintenance are all essential for safe cycling.

Ultimately, cycling is a rewarding and enjoyable activity that offers numerous benefits for physical and mental health. By prioritizing safety and taking necessary precautions, cyclists can enjoy their rides while minimizing their risk of injury or accident.
