Damen Shipyards Group has successfully delivered its second Combi Freighter 3850 vessel to Reederei Bernd Sibum, following successful sea trials in Shanghai. The vessel is the latest addition to a fleet of four being constructed at Damen Yichang Shipyard in China. The first vessel, which was delivered earlier this year, is currently on its maiden voyage to Norway with a project cargo. This delivery marks an important milestone in the construction process and demonstrates Damen's commitment to delivering high-quality vessels to its customers.
The Combi Freighter 3850 is designed for maximum efficiency, allowing it to sail on 100% biofuel in its standard form. The vessel also features hybrid propulsion capabilities, which enable it to operate with zero emissions for a period of time and shore power connection when in port. These sustainable features are made possible by funding from the German Government, which has enabled Reederei Bernd Sibum to invest in additional eco-friendly modifications.
The NaMKü program, awarded by the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport, aims to reduce the environmental footprint of short sea shipping. The green modifications of these vessels are jointly funded by the NaMay program and the vessel owner, with Mare Trust AG taking the lead on the equity side. As a result, the four vessels will feature hybrid propulsion with a PTO/PTI system, providing the opportunity to sail with zero emissions for a period of time.
The Econavina Ventifails fitted on these vessels are expected to reduce fuel consumption by an additional 12.5%. The first vessel is scheduled to undergo this process at Damen Shiprepair Harlingen shortly after arrival in Europe. This demonstrates the importance of investing in sustainable technologies and the potential for significant reductions in environmental impact.
Damen undertook Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing of the onboard systems and automation prior to commissioning. This allows safe, repetitive testing, adjustment, and validation prior to construction, resulting in efficient commissioning and ensuring the vessel meets expectations from the outset.
The CF 3850 vessels are also being installed with Damen Triton, a loT system that collects and analyzes data from thousands of sensors located around the vessels. This enables real-time optimization of sailing and provides feedback that informs the ongoing evolution of Damen's designs over successive generations.
The delivery of these vessels marks an important step forward in the adoption of sustainable shipping practices. With hybrid propulsion and shore power capabilities, Reederei Bernd Sibum is well-positioned to reduce its environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future for the industry.
Damen Shipyards Group's commitment to delivering high-quality, sustainable vessels is evident in this delivery. The company's focus on innovation and customer satisfaction ensures that its vessels meet the evolving needs of the shipping industry.
As the shipping industry continues to evolve, the adoption of sustainable technologies such as hybrid propulsion and shore power will become increasingly important. This delivery marks an important milestone in this journey, demonstrating the potential for significant reductions in environmental impact and paving the way for a more sustainable future.
