Maritime Industry Sees Boost from e-Methane Supply Deal

Mar 30, 20262 min readMarineLink News

Titan Clean Fuels has signed an off-take agreement with green energy supplier TURN2X to deliver e-Methane to the maritime industry from 2028 onwards. This partnership will enable Titan to expand its existing bunker vessel operations, which currently serve seven ports across Europe. With this new deal, Titan will be able to deliver e-Methane in approximately 52 ports, further increasing its reach and accessibility for ship operators.

TURN2X's modular production plant in Miajadas, Spain, converts renewable energy and biogenic CO2 into ISCC-certified e-methane, which is then fed into the grid and transported to major European ports. This process allows for the production of a green fuel that can achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions on a well-to-wake basis.

E-methane offers an up to 95% reduction in NOx emissions and achieves virtually zero SOx and particulate matter emissions, making it an attractive alternative to traditional fossil fuels. These emissions reductions also make ships using e-methane eligible for FuelEU Maritime overcompliance and the commercial benefits of banking and pooling.

Shipping companies with a compliance surplus or deficit can join Titan's FuelEU pool, which allows them to bank and pool their credits to maximize their environmental benefits. This move is expected to have a positive impact on the industry's ability to reduce its carbon footprint.

TURN2X's e-methane is also certified as a renewable fuel of non-biological origin (RFNBO), which will enable shipping companies to double-count the impact of RFNBO from 2025 to 2033. This means that ships using e-methane can potentially earn more credits under FuelEU Maritime.

The EU's commitment to phasing out Russian LNG and ending short-term contracts has created a significant opportunity for green fuels like e-methane to play a major role in the industry's energy mix. Scaling up production of these fuels will directly support energy security and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels.

E-methane can be dropped into all existing LNG infrastructure with little to no modification required, making it an attractive option for ship operators who already have LNG bunkering equipment in place. This means that e-methane is supported by LNG bunkering infrastructure in approximately 222 ports worldwide.

The high energy density of e-methane compared to methanol and ammonia will require larger fuel tanks or more frequent bunkering operations, which could impact the industry's bottom line. However, the long-term benefits of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality make this a worthwhile investment for shipping companies.

As the maritime industry continues to evolve towards cleaner fuels, partnerships like the one between Titan Clean Fuels and TURN2X will play a critical role in driving innovation and reducing emissions. With e-methane set to become increasingly available, ship operators can look forward to a more sustainable future.
