Electric Victory: General Motors Sees Bright Future Amid Trump's War on EVs

Apr 2, 20262 min readCleanTechnica

General Motors has emerged as a major beneficiary of the current state of affairs, with the company's Q1 2026 results revealing a promising outlook for the future. The company's optimistic take on the market comes as Trump's efforts to undermine the vehicle electrification movement have backfired. With the US President's recent decision to launch a full-scale war against Iran, the cost of fuel has skyrocketed, making electric vehicles an increasingly attractive option.

The damage caused by Trump's actions was evident in the Q4 2025 figures for new car sales, with Nissan and GM's Chevrolet branch experiencing flame-outs. However, other manufacturers such as Ford, Kia, and Volkswagen managed to avoid catastrophe, while GM's Cadillac branch even managed to pull off a year-on-year increase in sales.

The recent surge in EV sales is a clear indication that the industry is moving forward despite the challenges posed by the US government. Private sector stakeholders have continued to build out the nation's public fast charging network, and some states had already spent at least part of the NEVI funds, making it difficult for Trump to claw back the money.

The off-lease EVs hitting the US market this year are expected to give a significant boost to overall sales. State-based incentives and utility rebates may also help to offset some of the damage done by the loss of the tax credit.

GM's Q1 2026 results revealed a rosy take on the future, with the company citing product appeal and continued expansion of the public charging infrastructure as key drivers of growth.

The Chevrolet Equinox EV and Blazer EV, and the Cadillac LYRIQ and OPTIQ, were ranked among the best electric SUVs by MotorTrend. This is a significant boost to GM's credibility in the market, and suggests that the company's product lineup is on track for success.

A recent J.D. Power study shows EV-owner satisfaction at its highest level since 2021, with 96% of new owners saying they would consider purchasing or leasing another EV for their next vehicle. This is a clear indication that the industry is moving in the right direction.

As the charging infrastructure continues to grow, it is getting easier to own an EV. GM drivers now have access to more than 245,000 public chargers across North America, making long-distance travel without an EV a much less appealing option.

GM's partnership with Pilot Company is another example of the company's commitment to expanding its charging infrastructure. This partnership will help to further increase the number of public chargers available to GM customers.
