Dealership Employee's Joyride Ends in Arrest and Lawsuit

A routine service visit at a Mercedes dealership took a strange turn when a customer's sedan appeared at local bars instead of the repair bay. The incident highlights the importance of trust and communication between customers and car dealerships. When it comes to our vehicles, we often rely on the dealership to handle them with care and professionalism.

The situation began when Kimberly Porter dropped off her C300 for service at a Mercedes dealership in Memphis. She had noticed issues with the vehicle, including idling on the interstate shortly after a fill-up, which led her to believe that bad fuel might be the cause. A month later, on January 16, the vehicle was still at the dealer.

However, things took a strange turn when Porter's GPS tracker showed her car leaving the dealership around 6 p.m. She initially suspected a glitch, but a second alert confirmed the vehicle was moving. It later appeared at J. Alexander's restaurant in Cordova before moving again to TJ Mulligan's location.

When Porter got into the loaner vehicle provided by the dealer and drove there herself, she found her C-Class sitting in the parking lot. This unexpected turn of events led her to call the police, initially believing that her car had been stolen.

Using a spare key, Porter unlocked her car and was shocked to find a coat inside with identification belonging to Derrick Nguyen, an employee at the dealership. Police reportedly found this evidence when they arrived at the bar.

Nguyen claimed he had permission to use the car, but the dealership's service manager denied this claim. According to reports, Nguyen was arrested and charged with theft of property after appearing intoxicated during his arrest.

Porter has since filed a civil suit against Nguyen and Mercedes-Benz of Collierville. She also alleges that a dealership executive asked her to drop the charges, describing Nguyen as 'a really good kid.' This case serves as a reminder to be cautious when trusting others with our vehicles.

The incident raises questions about the level of supervision and accountability within car dealerships. With Porter's car appearing at multiple locations without her knowledge or consent, it's clear that something went terribly wrong. The dealership's handling of the situation has been called into question, and it remains to be seen how this case will unfold.

Ultimately, this incident highlights the importance of clear communication and trust between customers and car dealerships. It serves as a reminder to carefully review contracts and understand what is expected of us when we hand over our vehicles for service.
