Drivers who sued Mitsubishi over the issue of 'fluttering' hoods on their Outlander models are finally getting paid, while dealerships scramble to fix the problem. The company has agreed to a settlement that includes replacing defective hoods, extending warranty periods, and paying out $75,000 in compensation to individual claimants.
The lawsuit, which was filed last year, targeted the persistent issue of hoods bouncing and fluttering at highway speeds, raising concerns over safety and build quality. Mitsubishi had already issued a technical service bulletin in 2021, but the plaintiffs argued that it didn't fully resolve the problem.
Under the settlement, dealers will replace the hoods of defective models, ensure they're correctly paint-matched to the rest of the body, and offer loaner or rental vehicles at no charge to eligible owners. The company has also agreed to pay $5,000 each to two named plaintiffs and 15 additional individuals who joined the case.
75 million in compensation for their work. A final settlement fairness hearing is scheduled for August 3, 2026, at which point the terms will receive court approval and full implementation can begin.
This settlement marks a significant step towards resolving the issue of defective hoods on Mitsubishi Outlander models. While it's good news for affected owners, it also highlights the importance of manufacturers taking proactive steps to address quality control issues and providing adequate support to customers.
