GM and Allison Transmission Renew Partnership After Brief Hiatus

GM and Allison Transmission Renew Partnership After Brief Hiatus

Feb 5, 20261 min readCar and Driver (All)

The partnership between General Motors and Allison Transmission, which had hit a rough patch last year, has been renewed. The two brands had announced that GM's heavy-duty trucks would lose their Allison badges in 2022, but it appears that the drama between them has smoothed over.

A spokesperson for General Motors confirmed to Car and Driver that Allison badging will be added back to the production line for the 2026 Chevy Silverado HD and 2026 GMC Sierra HD lineups. Despite the hiccup, the hardware in the pickups remained unchanged, with GM continuing to use the 10L 1000 10-speed automatic transmission, which it co-developed with Ford.

The new transmission was ultimately verified and signed off on by Allison, though the transmission company doesn't actually build the units that wind up in trucks. It's unclear how many HD trucks were produced without the Allison branding, but there are no plans to retrofit them with the badge.

The renewal of the partnership is a testament to the importance of relationships in business, and it seems that GM and Allison have bought each other flowers - or at least, they've bought themselves back together. As for what this means for truck enthusiasts, it's likely that we'll see more of the same high-quality transmissions from both companies in the future.

With the renewed partnership, fans can look forward to seeing these iconic trucks hit the roads once again with their signature Allison badging.
