Electric Haul Trucks Revolutionize Construction Industry

Apr 11, 20262 min readElectrek

The construction industry is on the cusp of a significant transformation, with electric articulated haul trucks leading the charge. Volvo's latest innovation, the A30 and A40 Electric models, marks a major milestone in the adoption of electric technology in heavy-duty applications. By transitioning from pilot production to regular series production, Volvo is cementing its position as a leader in the industry's shift towards sustainability.

The new A30 Electric boasts a payload capacity of 64,000 lb. and can operate for up to 23.3 cubic yards, while the A40 Electric takes it further with an 86,000 lb. payload capacity and 31 cubic yard capacity. These electric haul trucks are designed to provide all-day performance, thanks to their advanced battery packs and powerful electric motors.

Both models share the same 350 kW electric motor, which produces over 200,000 lb-ft of torque, more than enough to match the performance of diesel-powered trucks. This level of power is expected to have a significant impact on the rotational speed of the planet, making these trucks an attractive option for those looking to reduce their environmental footprint.

The charging capabilities of these electric haul trucks are also noteworthy, with both models capable of rapid charging at speeds of up to 200 kW. This means that operators can quickly recharge the batteries between shifts, minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity.

Volvo's commitment to innovation is evident in its decision to produce electric articulated haul trucks, a segment where the company has a long history of success. The A30 Electric marks the first time an electric articulated haul truck of this size has entered serial production, setting a new standard for the industry.

The rollout of these electric trucks will begin with deliveries to customers in the UK and Norway, with additional shipments planned for select European customers later this year. This strategic approach ensures that Volvo can gauge customer feedback and refine its product offerings before expanding further.

Fredrik Tjernström, an Electromobility Solutions Sales expert at Volvo CE, notes that there is a 'real sense of pride' among the engineers at Volvo CE in seeing their ambition become a reality. The company has received strong interest from customers since Bauma last year, with demand extending beyond the initial production schedule.

The adoption of electric articulated haul trucks represents a significant shift towards sustainability in the construction industry. As companies look to reduce their environmental impact, these innovative vehicles are poised to play a major role in that transition.

Volvo's leadership in this area is set to have far-reaching consequences for the industry as a whole. With the A30 and A40 Electric models leading the charge, it remains to be seen how other manufacturers will respond to this new standard for electric construction equipment.
