Currently, only one of Buick's four SUV models, the Enclave , is built in the United States. For its imported vehicles, the automaker has had to navigate the higher tariffs implemented by the Trump administration last year. The Envision, built in China, has been the hardest hit.

But now General Motors has confirmed that its next-generation Buick compact crossover will instead be built in the United States. The new SUV will share its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox and is set to begin production at the Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas in 2028. This move marks a significant shift for Buick, which currently relies on imported vehicles from China.

While the Envision name may not carry over to this new product, it's unclear what the brand's next steps will be in terms of naming conventions. The production of the new SUV is expected to bring jobs and economic growth to the Kansas City area. With its platform shared with the Chevrolet Equinox, the Buick compact crossover is poised to compete in a crowded market.

GM plans to continue importing the Envision from China ahead of the new SUV's production starting in 2028. The new SUV will arrive later than expected, with an exact launch date still pending. For now, fans of Buick can expect more details about the vehicle to be shared closer to its launch.

With the shift to domestic production, Buick is taking a step towards greater self-sufficiency and reduced dependence on imported vehicles. The move also highlights General Motors' efforts to diversify its manufacturing operations and reduce its reliance on international suppliers.

This move by Buick signals a significant shift in the automaker's strategy, as it seeks to increase its domestic production and reduce its reliance on imported vehicles from China. By sharing its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox, Buick is able to tap into GM's established manufacturing expertise and economies of scale.
