San Diego Steps Up EV Charging Infrastructure

San Diego is making significant strides in expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. About six months ago, it was announced that 750 to 800 public EV chargers would be installed in San Diego. Another announcement was made yesterday about installing 67 new public EV chargers.

The locations of the newly installed chargers will include libraries, recreation centers, and community centers, where they will typically be Level 2 chargers providing around 30-40 miles per hour of charging.

When EV drivers frequent these sites, they can receive a meaningful charge in a relatively short period. However, it's worth noting that about 80% of EV charging happens at home, and modern EVs have enough range to drive to a destination without needing an additional charge.

Some people believe that EVs require 700 miles of range, but in reality, most drivers need only around 200-300 miles for their daily commutes. With the increasing number of public EV chargers, including fast chargers for long-distance trips, this distance will become increasingly manageable.

For driving in and around San Diego, a charge lasting 200-300 miles would be more than sufficient. As the city's charging network continues to grow, the distance between chargers is shrinking, with some areas potentially seeing a charger every 25 miles or less.

The expansion of EV charging infrastructure in San Diego is part of a larger trend, as companies like EvGO continue to install new fast chargers throughout the region. In fact, just four weeks ago, EvGO announced it had installed 28 new fast chargers near the coast.

San Diego's over 2,700 public EV chargers are already contributing to the city's growing reputation as a hub for clean energy and sustainable transportation. As the largest EV market in the US, California is paving the way for widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

The addition of these new chargers will further increase the convenience and accessibility of EV driving in San Diego. With more public charging options available, drivers can enjoy longer trips without worrying about running out of charge.

As the country continues to shift towards a cleaner energy future, cities like San Diego are playing a crucial role in making electric vehicles a mainstream option.
