The Belgian offshore contractor DEME has taken a significant step in strengthening its position in the offshore wind industry by naming its new jack-up offshore transport and installation vessel, Norse Energi. This move comes as part of the company's efforts to expand its fleet and support larger offshore wind installations. The addition of Norse Energi is expected to play a crucial role in accelerating the energy transition and delivering innovative solutions for offshore wind projects worldwide.
The Norse Energi wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) is designed to transport and install next-generation wind turbines and XXL monopiles in water depths of up to 70 metres. This increased capacity will enable DEME to support larger offshore wind installations, reducing installation timelines through higher transport capacity per trip.
The vessels are equipped with 3,200-ton cranes, which are intended to support larger offshore wind installations while improving the efficiency and safety of the installation process. The addition of these cranes will also enable DEME to take on more complex projects in the future.
The Norse Energi is not the only new vessel added to DEME's fleet, as it is accompanied by its sister vessel, Norse Wind. Together, these vessels represent a significant expansion of DEME's offshore wind installation capabilities and will play a key role in supporting the growth of the industry.
Demolition and construction company DEME has been actively involved in the development of the offshore wind industry for several years. The addition of Norse Energi to its fleet is a testament to the company's commitment to innovation and sustainability in this sector.
The new vessel features hybrid power systems and 4.2 MWh battery systems, which are designed to improve fuel efficiency and lower emissions. This technology aims to reduce the environmental impact of offshore wind installations and support the transition to a more sustainable energy future.
With the addition of Norse Energi and Norse Wind to its fleet, DEME is further reinforcing its commitment to accelerating the energy transition and delivering innovative solutions for offshore wind projects worldwide. The company's ambition to push boundaries and support customers in delivering next-generation offshore wind projects is evident in this new generation of vessels.
The initial assignments for Norse Energi include Iberdrola’s Windanker offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea from June 2026 and Ørsted’s Hornsea 3 project in the UK from the third quarter of 2026. These projects represent significant opportunities for DEME to support the growth of the offshore wind industry.
The offshore wind industry is expected to continue growing in the coming years, with increasing demand for vessels like Norse Energi that can support larger installations and reduce installation timelines. As such, DEME's expansion of its fleet is likely to have a significant impact on the industry's ability to deliver sustainable energy solutions.
