Fire trucks have long been a source of fascination for many people, particularly children. The combination of their large size, blaring sirens, bright red paint jobs, and array of equipment makes them an attractive subject. For some, this enthusiasm never fades, and now collectors have the opportunity to own vintage fire trucks. A collection of over a dozen vintage fire trucks is up for auction via RM Sotheby's in Miami, with all vehicles listed at no reserve. This collection spans nearly 100 years and includes promotional and marketing tools used by American LaFrance, a prominent manufacturer of emergency vehicles from 1873 to 2014.
The oldest vehicle in the collection dates back to 1858, but it is not a truck, but rather a hand-drawn and hand-operated pumping engine. Built by Button & Blake, this device featured an innovative 'anti-pulsation chamber' that equalized water flow through the pump for a consistent flow. The carriage is mostly made of wood and adorned with ornate painted decorations.
The collection also includes internal combustion-powered vehicles, with the oldest option being the 1911 American LaFrance Type 5 Double Tank Combination. This vehicle features a unique design, including 23-karat gold leaf and a miniature statue of Liberty atop the bell. The estimated price for this truck is between $100,000 and $200,000.

The most modern fire truck available is a 1956 American LaFrance 700 Series '775-PJO' Pumper, with over 3000 units built during its 12-year production span. This model was instrumental in the switch to the cab-forward configuration now used in many fire trucks. The vehicle originally featured a V-12 engine but was later replaced by a Detroit Diesel six-cylinder.
The collection also includes other notable vehicles, such as the 1911 American LaFrance Type 8 Roadster, which is believed to have been used by American LaFrance executives. This car features the same four-cylinder engine as the Type 5 but in a shorter chassis with a unique transaxle gearbox.
Despite its rarity, the Type 8 Roadster is expected to fetch between $300,000 and $500,000 at auction. The RM Sotheby's auction, which includes other vehicles aside from the American LaFrance collection, kicks off on Friday, February 27. Even if you're not in the market for a vintage fire truck, it's worth browsing the listings to appreciate these historic workhorses.

The upcoming auction will attract collectors and enthusiasts of vintage fire trucks, as well as those interested in the history of emergency vehicles. The collection offers a unique glimpse into the evolution of firefighting equipment and technology over nearly a century.
