Mazda CX-5 vs CX-50: Compact SUV Showdown

Feb 24, 20262 min readCar and Driver (All)

The Mazda CX-5 and CX-50 are two compact SUVs that sit near the top of our rankings, having won Car and Driver comparison tests and been among our Editors' Choice picks. Choosing between the two mostly comes down to personal preferences, as they look different inside and out but otherwise feel similar from behind the wheel.

The main difference in size between the CX-5 and CX-50 is their proportions and interior dimensions. The CX-50 is lower, wider, and slightly longer overall, casting a sleeker profile than the more upright CX-5. However, the redesigned 2026 CX-5 has been stretched to have the same wheelbase as the CX-50, resulting in slight differences in passenger room.

The CX-5 has a bit more passenger space and more headroom for both front and rear passengers. In contrast, the CX-50 has split-folding rear seats that expand the cargo area when needed. Both models offer similar cargo space, with the CX-50 able to fit nine carry-on suitcases behind the rear seats.

Mazda has made a major change to its infotainment system in the 2026 CX-5, featuring a significantly larger touchscreen interface than what's available in the CX-50. The lower trims have a 12.9-inch touchscreen, while the higher trims boast a 15.6-inch screen.

The CX-50 continues with an older infotainment setup, using a control knob on the console to operate the 8.8-inch screen, although a touchscreen function is available when using smartphone-mirroring functions. This difference in technology may be a deciding factor for some buyers.

Both models offer the same gas engine as standard, but the CX-50 has two additional powertrains: a turbocharged inline-four and a hybrid model. The base engine for both vehicles is a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 187 horsepower.

The turbocharged CX-50 offers significantly more power than the naturally aspirated version, with 256 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. In contrast, the CX-50 Hybrid has a total output of 219 horsepower, thanks to its three electric motors. A hybrid model is also planned for the CX-5 in the near future.

In terms of towing capacity, the CX-50 takes the lead with a maximum rating of 3500 pounds using the turbo engine. The naturally aspirated CX-50 can tow up to 2000 pounds, while the Hybrid is limited to 1500 pounds. The CX-5 also has a towing capacity of 1500 pounds.

EPA gas-mileage ratings for both models are nearly identical, with the base-engine versions rated at 26 mpg combined. However, the turbocharged CX-50 drops to 25 mpg combined, while the CX-50 Hybrid earns an impressive 38 mpg combined.
