United Airlines' Pivot To The Boeing 737 MAX 10 Streamlines Domestic High-Density Operations

The Boeing 737 MAX 10 is a long-awaited answer to the Airbus A321neo, offering competitive economics with per-seat costs even lower than that of its rival. This new variant is expected to be a game-changer in the narrow-body market, providing airlines with a more efficient and cost-effective option for high-density domestic operations. With its promise of delivering better economics, Boeing's 737 MAX 10 has garnered significant attention from major carriers like United Airlines.

United Airlines was initially a strong supporter of the 737 MAX 10 when it was first launched in 2017, with plans to become its largest operator. However, delays have led the Chicago-based carrier to reassess its orders and swap many of them to the MAX 9 variant. Despite this, United will soon get its hands on the Boeing version of history's best-selling airliner.

United Airlines holds a significant order for the 737 MAX 10, with 167 aircraft on tap, in addition to 123 737 MAX 8s and 224 737 MAX 9s. While it was once set to be the largest operator, this is no longer the case due to delays and changes in airline demand. United's order for the 737 MAX 10 has been significantly reduced over time.

The airline plans to install 189 seats on its 737 MAX 10 fleet, consisting of 20 United First seats and 169 economy seats (including 64 Economy Plus seats). This configuration will provide a similar capacity to its 737-900ER/MAX 9s, with an additional row of six seats along with a new row of only four seats. The Airbus A321neo also offers a comparable first-class experience but has more economy seats.

With 167 examples, the 737 MAX 10 fleet will be widespread across United's mainland US hubs. It is likely that these aircraft will operate high-demand routes to Hawaii and the Caribbean alongside the Airbus A321neo, as well as domestic services. The ETOPS rating of the 737 MAX 10 will also enable it to fly on long-haul routes.

United had initially planned to operate a subfleet of 737 MAX 10s with 22 Polaris seats but canceled these plans due to certification delays. Instead, the Airbus A321neo has taken on this role. The 737 MAX 10's smaller Polaris configuration was likely a casualty of the certification delays.

The introduction of the 737 MAX 10 marks a significant shift in United Airlines' fleet strategy, with the airline opting for a more efficient and cost-effective option for high-density domestic operations. This decision will have a lasting impact on the carrier's network and operational efficiency.

As Boeing continues to work towards certification, United Airlines will soon get to experience the benefits of its 737 MAX 10 fleet. With this new aircraft, the airline can expect improved economics and increased competitiveness in the narrow-body market.
