General Motors (GM) has announced a recall of more than 80,000 Chevrolet Equinox EVs in the United States due to a defect in the pedestrian warning system. This marks the second recall for the same safety issue, as the system is not loud enough to be heard by pedestrians.

The Chevrolet Equinox EV is a significant player in GM's electric vehicle lineup, competing with models like the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E. S.

regulations, electric vehicles must emit a sound at low speeds to ensure pedestrian safety, but the Equinox EV's system was miscalibrated during production. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has indicated that the lack of audible warning poses a genuine risk to pedestrians.

The recall affects a total of 81,177 units, including 59,537 from the 2025 model year and 21,640 from the 2026 model year. GM initiated an internal investigation after an engineer reported the issue through the company's safety program, highlighting the importance of quality control in vehicle production.

This second recall underscores the challenges automakers face in meeting safety regulations, especially with new technologies.
