A scheduled Alaska Airlines flight from Seattle to Sacramento had to request police to meet the aircraft at the gate, after it is alleged that a passenger vaped on board, setting off the smoke alarm at 35,000 feet. The pilot's decision to request law enforcement support underscores the severity of the situation.
Vaping or smoking on board is prohibited due to the severe fire risk and potential harm to other passengers and crew. The ban is enforced by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and applies to all commercial flights.
The Alaska Airlines flight, operating as AS1463, had departed from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) on Thursday when the passenger in question made their way to the onboard lavatory and then proceeded to smoke from a vape. This incident highlights the need for vigilant crew members to detect such behavior.

After the incident, the pilot requested support from law enforcement to meet the airplane on arrival at Sacramento International Airport (SMF), reiterating that they had found a passenger vaping onboard and setting off the alarms. The captain's request for someone to have a conversation with the passenger is a clear indication of the seriousness of the situation.
The flight number was initially reported as AS1436, but further investigation revealed it was actually AS1463, operated by a Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft. This flight departs from Seattle at 9:24 am daily and arrives in Sacramento at 11:17 am after a one-hour and 53-minute flight.
The incident occurred on a day when the flight departed late from Seattle, having pushed back from SEA at 10:39, one hour and 15 minutes late. The flight was operated by aircraft N983AK, a two-year-old MAX 9 that joined the Alaska fleet in June 2023.

Further investigation into the incident revealed that the flight from Sacramento then operated an onward flight to Portland International Airport (PDX), which was also delayed, departing from SMF at 1:17 pm instead of 12:11 pm. The cause of this delay remains unclear.
The vaping incident raises concerns about the responsibility of passengers in maintaining a safe environment on board. In a short time, the passenger's actions put the entire flight at risk.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of enforcing smoking and vaping bans on commercial flights to ensure passenger safety. It also highlights the need for vigilant crew members and effective communication with law enforcement to address such incidents.
