Waymo recently hosted an event in Tokyo to share its autonomous driving technology and progress with local media specializing in automotive technology. As the pioneer in autonomous driving, Waymo has developed industry-leading hardware, AI, and operations that enabled the company to launch and scale the world's first autonomous ride-hailing service, serving over half a million trips every week across 10 U.S. cities.
This achievement is built on a foundation of continuous safety validation, resulting in demonstrably safe AI developed and validated across more than 300 million autonomous kilometers on public roads across the U.S.A. The Waymo Foundation Model leverages an end-to-end approach while complementing it with advanced safety checks before making any moves in real-world scenarios.
The company's partnership with Nihon Kotsu and GO will enable the Waymo Driver to adapt to Tokyo's unique complexities, including narrow local streets and diverse road environments. This collaboration marks a significant step towards bringing autonomous vehicles to Japan's streets.

Waymo's Chief Product Officer Saswat Panigrahi was joined by Ichiro Kawanabe, Chairman of GO, and Nicole Gavel, Senior Director Head of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships. The event showcased the company's commitment to expanding its technology into new markets.
Ichiro Kawanabe, Chairman of GO, expressed his enthusiasm for Waymo's autonomous driving technology, stating that he was convinced it represented the future of mobility when he first experienced it in 2023. He highlighted the importance of Tokyo as a site for Waymo's international expansion.
Kawanabe emphasized the partnership's focus on providing driving data to adapt the Waymo Driver to Tokyo's complex urban landscape. The collaboration aims to bring Japan its first autonomous taxi service, with fully autonomous vehicles set to operate on Tokyo's streets in the near future.
Nicole Gavel highlighted the strength of the collaboration between Nihon Kotsu and Waymo. She noted that combining their strengths would lay the groundwork for a new chapter of mobility in Tokyo, building upon Waymo's safety-proven technology.
The partnership demonstrates the growing importance of autonomous driving technology in Japan, where cities are increasingly looking to innovative solutions to address congestion and environmental concerns. As Waymo expands its presence in Tokyo, it is likely to have a significant impact on the country's transportation landscape.
Waymo's expansion into Japan marks an exciting development in the company's journey towards widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles. With its proven technology and commitment to continuous improvement, Waymo is well-positioned to shape the future of mobility in Tokyo and beyond.
