Formula 1 kicked off its first five-day test, or shakedown, at a chilly and sometimes wet Barcelona. Teams were allowed to run on three of the days. While it's too early to say anything definitive, teams are getting a handle on new cars.
Ferrari flew under the radar for most of the three days but topped the timesheets with Lewis Hamilton's effort on Friday, narrowly beating George Russell's previous Thursday benchmark. Mercedes comfortably led in mileage charts, running 151 laps on its first day, 183 on the second, and 168 on its third. The team was praised for its reliability and positive performance.
Lando Norris, the reigning World Champion, rolled out of the garage with his MCL40, beaming with pride over his title triumph. However, he acknowledged that it's still surreal and hasn't had time to fully accept it. McLaren faced a fuel systems issue but remained encouraged overall.
Aston Martin's first car, the AMR26, made its debut late on Wednesday but wasn't ready until the closing moments of Thursday. Despite being on the back foot in terms of mileage and understanding, the team remains upbeat. Red Bull hierarchy was cautious about expectations early on, given it's a new power unit manufacturer going up against long-standing engine producers.
The shakedown test is a critical phase for teams to understand their new cars and make any necessary adjustments before the main season starts. With Ferrari and Mercedes performing well, it's clear that these teams are in contention for the championship this year. However, with Aston Martin still getting accustomed to its new car, it's hard to predict their performance yet.
