Italian shipbuilding giant Fincantieri has joined forces with Generative Bionics in a groundbreaking partnership aimed at developing humanoid welding robots designed to work alongside human workers in shipyard environments. This collaboration is part of Fincantieri's broader strategy to leverage advanced robotics, physical AI, and innovation as core pillars of its new Industrial Plan. By combining Fincantieri's deep industrial expertise with Generative Bionics' autonomous humanoid robotics platform, the partners aim to improve safety, operational efficiency, and workmanship quality in shipyard welding operations while enhancing the long-term sustainability of labor-intensive activities.

The goal is to create a safe and efficient system that can be easily integrated into existing shipyard workflows. A key focus will be on developing a humanoid robot specifically engineered to support selected naval welding tasks, with advanced features such as artificial intelligence, manipulation capabilities, and vision systems dedicated to monitoring weld seams. Optimized locomotion will enable the robot to navigate complex shipyard environments with ease.

The system's design prioritizes safe collaboration with human workers while adhering to applicable safety regulations. Initial trials are planned for the end of 2026, with operational functionalities expected to be introduced within the first two years. Subsequent phases will focus on refinement, expansion, and industrial certification.

Development and testing will take place at Fincantieri's Sestri Ponente shipyard in Genoa, which will serve as the reference site for validation and certification. According to Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and General Manager of Fincantieri, advanced robotics and AI are crucial for maintaining competitiveness in European shipbuilding amidst rising production complexity and skilled labor shortages. Daniele Pucci, CEO and co-founder of Generative Bionics, notes that the project represents a significant step towards industrial validation, demonstrating the potential of humanoid robots to safely and effectively support highly specialized maritime manufacturing work.

This partnership also highlights a broader push for strengthening European technological sovereignty through advanced industrial collaboration.
