Tesla Boosts Smart Summon Speed by 33% with FSD Update

The latest update from Tesla has brought a significant boost to its Smart Summon feature, allowing vehicles equipped with AI4 hardware to reach speeds of up to 8 mph. This represents a 33% increase in top speed compared to the previous limit of 6 mph, which was often criticized for being too slow to navigate parking lots efficiently.

The update, FSD V14.3.3, also includes major architectural changes that rewrite the AI compiler with MLIR for faster reaction times and unifies the AI model powering consumer FSD, commercial Robotaxi fleets, and Summon into a single architecture.

Tesla's unified model gives the company confidence to raise the speed limit, as the system can now process its environment faster and react more quickly to obstacles, pedestrians, and other vehicles in parking lots.

The improvement builds on previous updates that introduced major architectural changes, including the use of MLIR for faster reaction times and the unification of AI models across different Tesla vehicles.

With this update, Tesla has taken a significant step forward in its autonomous driving capabilities, enabling vehicles to navigate complex environments more efficiently and safely.

However, it's worth noting that owners still running HW3 should not expect the same 8 mph cap, as the speed increase is limited to vehicles equipped with AI4 hardware only.

The company has been pushing advanced FSD features to AI4 first, with a 'V14 Lite' update for HW3 vehicles promised but yet to materialize.

Tesla's broader strategy of prioritizing AI4 hardware is consistent with its efforts to improve autonomous driving capabilities and expand its reach in the market.

As the company continues to advance its FSD technology, it's clear that Smart Summon will play an increasingly important role in its future plans for autonomous vehicles.
