Philippines and China Easing Tensions Amid South China Sea Disputes

Feb 10, 20261 min readMarineLink News

Despite ongoing tensions over maritime disputes in the South China Sea, the Philippines and China have signaled their willingness to set aside their differences and explore areas of economic cooperation. Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez, representing the Philippines in the United States, emphasized the need for both countries to 'cool' their temperature and engage in constructive dialogue.

Manila's relationship with Beijing should not be defined solely by maritime disputes, Romualdez noted, highlighting the importance of bilateral conversations and economic collaboration. The Philippines has been locked in a series of confrontations with China over its exclusive economic zone, including allegations of aggressive actions, water-cannoning, and interference in resupply missions.

China has also accused the Philippines of intruding into its claimed territory. However, recent weeks have seen a decrease in tensions, prompting Manila to reiterate that differences between states should be handled through diplomacy rather than public rhetoric.

As the Philippines chairs ASEAN this year, Romualdez stressed the need for China's significant participation in efforts to conclude a long-delayed Code of Conduct in the South China Sea. The Philippine foreign ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to completing the document within the year, with explicit references to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Diplomatic efforts are underway to ease friction and promote cooperation between the two nations, paving the way for improved relations and economic opportunities. By focusing on areas of common interest and engaging in constructive dialogue, both countries can work towards a more stable and peaceful South China Sea region.
