Audi's official Formula 1 team launch event marked the beginning of a new era for the luxury automaker. The event featured a light show and a haunting chorus at the venue used as the night club in John Wick 4, but it was not the most interesting thing the brand brought with it to Berlin. That honor belonged to the cars parked downstairs.

Four cars were on display: an Auto Union Type C, an S1 Quattro, a DTM-spec A4, and an R18 E-Tron Hybrid that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2013, still scarred with all of the cracks and scrapes that come from running that race. Audi's new R26 Formula 1 car is part of this timeline, which tells a story of dominance and success in motorsport. The brand has not shied away from suggesting that the expectation for a Volkswagen-backed works F1 team is a championship.

The team's official line is that the program will start competing for those honors by 2030. If the company is trying to manage expectations, it has not bought itself a long runway of patience. Audi's technical director, James Key, says that the team needs to plan for 'intermediate stations' along the way and become a serious competitor by the end of the season.

The team will also debut as a power unit constructor, meaning that both the engine and electrical components of the hybrid powertrain will be developed by the team's own shop. This is a new challenge for Audi, which has not participated in motorsport consistently like Ferrari or Porsche. The internal combustion side is another story, with problems to overcome due to the differences between the fuel and the competitors' experience.

As technical director of the constructor, Key's focus is more on the chassis side, but he is also focused on the complexities of the new powertrain system. Audi's goal is to build a fast car while taking into account the newly complicated relationship between the chassis and the regeneration-focused powertrain system.

EazyInWay Expert Take

Audi's entry into Formula 1 is ambitious, with high expectations for success. The team has a challenging road ahead of it, from building a competitive car to managing the complexities of hybrid powertrains. With a focus on becoming a serious competitor by the end of the season, Audi will need to navigate the ups and downs of its debut year.
